The Spanish Council of Ministers has authorised an investment of €44.29 million for the comprehensive upgrade of Embajadores and Laguna stations on Madrid Cercanías Line C-5, the busiest corridor on the network. The scheme, to be delivered by Adif, forms part of the C-5 Action Plan unveiled in March and will allow both stations to accommodate 200 m-long trains while enhancing accessibility, evacuation and safety standards.
Planned works
The project includes extending platforms at both stations by 30 m, bringing total platform length to up to 210 m. This intervention is essential to enable operation of new high-capacity suburban rolling stock built by Stadler. The capacity uplift responds to sustained ridership growth on the line, which recorded 72 million passengers in 2025.
At Laguna, works include the installation of two new lifts linking the concourse with the platforms, addressing a current accessibility shortfall. Four new emergency exits will be constructed, alongside direct stairways from platform level to street level. The scheme also provides for a new ventilation shaft, advanced fire detection systems and enhanced emergency protection measures.
At Embajadores, a second phase of evacuation and ventilation improvements will be undertaken. Evacuation points will be doubled from four to eight through the construction of new pressurised, compartmentalised exits equipped with refuges for passengers with reduced mobility. Key systems—including emergency lighting, public address, safety systems and wayfinding—will also be renewed.
Track renewal
The programme also covers renewal of the track over the 2.7 km section between the two stations. Ballast, sleepers and fastenings will be replaced along sections of the tunnel. Structural strengthening, waterproofing and drainage improvements will also be carried out, including new side drains and collectors.
These works form part of the Madrid Cercanías Plan, with a budget of €1.35 billion. Of this, €650 million is allocated to Adif for infrastructure, while Renfe is investing €700 million in rolling stock procurement and depot upgrades.
