The UK Government has announced improvements to the Delay Repay scheme for compensating passengers hit by late-running trains. Under Great British Railways, passengers will be able to claim at any retail outlet.

Key Reforms

The Government has unveiled a revamp of the Delay Repay system to make refunds quicker and less of a faff for passengers. It will kick in once rail renationalisation wraps up with Great British Railways (GBR), the single public body set to manage infrastructure and operate as the single TOC for PSO trains.

Under the new GBR setup, claims can be lodged straight from any ticket seller, including travel agents or apps like Trainline, ditching the current mess of 14 separate TOC portals.

Anti-Fraud Measures

New rules target fare dodgers and scammers, mandating proper validation of discount Railcards and capping refunds on unused tickets to 23:59 on the travel date – a contentious move expected to save £40m a year.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stressed these tweaks will make journeys simpler and more dependable, freeing up public dosh for fare freezes and station upgrades.

Industry Backing

Rail Delivery Group, Trainline, and Campaign for Better Transport have given the thumbs-up, hailing it as a big step towards a fairer, passenger-focused network.
