Renfe will increase capacity on Valencia’s C1, C2 and C6 commuter lines by 30% through the phased replacement of the existing fleet with 41 Class 465 Civia EMUs, according to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility.
The new trains will replace 34 Class 447 units, which have been in service since the early 1990s and offer 549 seats, together with seven Class 464 units, each providing 600 seats. Every Class 465 Civia unit consists of five articulated cars, measures 98 metres in length and can accommodate 748 passengers. This compares with the three-car, 76-metre Class 447 and the four-car, 80-metre Class 464.
The trains will enter service after undergoing refurbishment work focused on improving passenger comfort and onboard equipment.
Renfe expects to have 22 units available by the end of 2026, with the remaining 19 trains to be introduced progressively during 2027. The units are being transferred from Madrid’s Cercanías network, where they are being replaced by Class 453 trains, which are due to enter service shortly.
Services on lines C1 (València–Gandia), C2 (València–Xàtiva–Moixent) and C6 (València–Castelló) will be strengthened, delivering a substantial increase in daily capacity. The Class 465 Civia units, which have been in operation since 2003, feature—as do the Class 447 trains—a low-floor vehicle with level boarding from the platform to facilitate access for passengers with reduced mobility.
The renewal will reduce the average age of Renfe’s Valencia fleet and reinforce the operator’s commitment to more accessible, reliable and sustainable mobility.
