SNCF Voyageurs and the regional transport authority Île-de-France Mobilités (IdFM) have jointly launched a call for tenders to purchase up to 300 new double-deck trains of the future Z2N NG series.
The framework contract, with a maximum duration of 23 years, could reach a total value of €8 billion. It includes a firm order for 52 trains valued at €1.5 billion.
This initial batch of 52 units, worth €1.5 billion, will be deployed on the forthcoming Line Y service, linking Dourdan and Saint-Martin d’Étampes via Austerlitz.
A first optional batch includes another 198 trains for approximately €4.1 billion, which will also serve the same line. These new trains will replace the ageing Z2N fleets—series Z 5600, Z 8800, Z 20500 and Z 20900—built between 1982 and 2004.
Further options within the contract cover maintenance and logistics services for both IdFM and SNCF.
Each train will be up to 105 metres long and will carry between 455 and 500 passengers. They will be fully accessible, with doors aligned to 550 mm-high platforms—the French standard. The trains will be dual-voltage (1.5 kV DC / 25 kV 50 Hz AC) and equipped with onboard energy storage, enabling at least 5 km of operation without overhead power supply.
Expressions of interest must be submitted by 31 March.
