The president of Renfe, Álvaro Fernández Heredia, has affirmed this Saturday that the company is “a victim” of the Adamuz (Córdoba) train accident of 18 January, which caused 46 deaths, and is committed to providing all the information without “speculation” to clarify the facts.
“Not only do we have victims among our passengers, but also among our workers,” he said in statements reported by the media during the inauguration of the 2026 Strawberry Train season.
Comparison with Angrois and rejection of “noise”.
Fernández Heredia compared the situation to the Angrois accident (Santiago de Compostela, 2013), which left 80 dead, and insisted that Renfe will collaborate with the judicial authorities to give “the truth” that the victims deserve.
“We are going to put all the information at the service of the authorities,” he stressed, rejecting any “speculation” that only generates “noise” and harms those affected.
The investigation points to a possible track breakage as the cause of the initial derailment of the Iryo train, on a recently renovated straight section. It is suspected that the breakage could have occurred hours earlier without being detected.
