Alstom has signed a €915 million turnkey contract to act as integrator and rolling stock supplier for Serbia’s first metro system, in the city of Belgrade.

The French manufacturer will work on Line 1 of the network, which will become the country’s first fully automated railway. It will handle the rail and systems packages, while the heavy civil engineering works—tunnels, stations, and underground and surface structures—are being delivered by other contractors, including the Chinese consortium Power China.

Specifically, Alstom will supply and integrate 32 three-car automatic Metropolis trains, built at its Valenciennes site in France, together with the Urbalis CBTC signalling and telecommunications system. The contract also includes power supply, permanent way, platform screen doors, depot and workshop equipment, a centralised control centre, and cybersecurity systems.

The initial phase of Line 1 will cover 15 kilometres and 15 stations, most of it in tunnel, and is aimed at easing surface congestion while supporting Belgrade’s economic growth and environmental goals.

This project will also make Belgrade the only city in Serbia with a planned metro network, as no other part of the country currently has such a system.
