Renfe Engineering and Maintenance and Mitsubishi Electric Europe have inked a strategic pact to transform the Villaverde depot into a European benchmark for railway traction motor servicing.
This facility will handle overhauls for Renfe Group units and Mitsubishi’s international punters, covering Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America.
The tie-up covers joint maintenance, repair, and inspection of traction motors, as well as hands-on training for Renfe staff delivered by Mitsubishi’s tech crew on-site.
Operational Split
Mitsubishi will lay down the technical procedures, tooling, spares, and QA checks, while Renfe brings its heavy-duty workshop muscle to the table.
The initial two-year stint is extendable by mutual consent, kicking off with a heavy overhaul on series 449 traction motors supplied by the Japanese firm.
This fits snugly into Renfe’s Comprehensive Workshops and Maintenance Plan 2025-2030, backed by over €1 billion to modernise and digitise its sheds.
