The Regional Ministry of Public Works of Murcia has formalised the contract to examine the proposed expansion of the tram network towards Alcantarilla, Molina de Segura and Santomera, with a budget of €844,078 spread over three financial years.

The publicly owned company Urbamusa will be in charge of preparing, over the next three years, both an informative study and the corresponding environmental impact assessment.

The aim is to define possible alignments and stops, while assessing the technical, urban planning and economic feasibility of the future metropolitan network. The study will be developed in six phases — from the initial documentation to the final report — including traffic analyses and environmental evaluation.

This initiative complements the study already launched by Murcia City Council to extend the tramway to the forthcoming intermodal station at El Carmen and, later, to El Palmar.

According to the Regional Minister for Public Works, Jorge García Montoro, the extension forms part of both the Passenger Transport Master Plan and the Metropolitan Transport Plan for Murcia, with the goal of improving links between the city and its surrounding areas before the end of the decade.
