The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, has awarded a €5.17 million contract for the construction of a new depot to service the metre-gauge network at El Berrón. The contract has been granted to the joint venture UTE COMSA, SAU, made up of COMSA, SAU and COMSA Instalaciones y Sistemas Industriales, SAU.
Tendered last July, the project seeks to bring together all existing facilities currently spread across different sites into a single, purpose-built location. The future complex will feature state-of-the-art maintenance equipment and benefit from a direct connection to the main line.
The facility will consist of three interconnected modules and an adjacent development area next to El Berrón station, at the junction of Calle de la Estación and Avenida Somata. It will include a train workshop, a warehouse, a shed with two tracks and an inspection pit, as well as offices and welfare areas for more than one hundred employees responsible for the upkeep of lines C5 (Laviana–Gijón) and C6 (Oviedo–Infiesto).
The project reinforces El Berrón’s status as the principal hub of railway activity in Asturias, already home to the region’s Traffic Control Centre. It forms part of the Asturias Commuter Rail Plan, which is mobilising €1.482 billion to modernise and improve the reliability of the Principality’s rail infrastructure.
