The Portuguese government has approved Comboios de Portugal (CP)’s purchase of 20 high-speed trains (12 firm orders and 8 optional), each with a capacity of 500 passengers and a top speed of 300 km/h.
The total investment amounts to €584 million, including €45 million earmarked for depots and equipment, under the Mobilidade 2.0 programme approved this Thursday by the Council of Ministers.
These trains will serve the Lisbon–Porto high-speed line, covered in detail in this report.
The decision follows the relaunch of the tender for the Oiã–Soure section of the future Lisbon–Porto high-speed corridor, a 30-year concession valued at €2.4 billion. The Minister for Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, stressed that CP will set up a dedicated operator for this segment and is preparing to compete in the international market.
In addition, the government aims to accelerate the delivery of Alstom’s new regional and suburban fleet. The order, consisting of 153 units (55 regional and 98 commuter trains), was initially scheduled for completion by 2033, but efforts are being made to bring it forward to 2031.
With the procurement of the high-speed fleet, total investment in new rolling stock now exceeds €1.6 billion — the most ambitious rolling stock renewal programme in Portugal’s railway history.
