Las Tablas stabling facility awarded €47m contract to bolster Chamartín

Madrid Chamartín will gain a major high-speed stabling yard at Las Tablas, with capacity for 17 trainsets, enhancing operational flexibility and throughput at the capital’s northern hub.

Adif Alta Velocidad has awarded a €47.13m contract for the construction of a technical stabling yard at Las Tablas, north of Madrid Chamartín, aimed at increasing the terminal’s operational capacity.

The installation will be developed on the former SEMAT site. It will comprise 17 standard-gauge sidings arranged in two groups (10 and 7 tracks), each with a useful length of 405 m. These will accommodate high-speed trainsets for stabling as well as servicing and light maintenance tasks, including shore power, water supply and waste discharge systems in one of the track groups.

The scheme includes a technical building with segregated areas for Adif and train operators, alongside service platforms, internal level crossings and an underpass. A perimeter service road will also be provided for logistics and access.

Works cover demolition of existing assets, drainage renewal, utility diversions and modification of the interface with the Madrid–Valladolid high-speed line. The connection will be configured only towards the Chamartín side, meaning trains cannot be dispatched directly northbound from the facility. Slab track will be installed in Sector A and ballasted track in Sector B, with full electrification.

The infrastructure will strengthen operations at Chamartín, which handled 46.2 million passengers in 2025 following its recent expansion.
