Metro de Madrid’s Line 6 renewal has reached a further milestone with the arrival in the capital of the first series 10000 unit, procured to replace the line’s rolling stock. Until now, a train had only been observed on test at the Corella circuit.
The transfer to Cuatro Vientos depot was completed this week. Initial commissioning tests will be undertaken there before the unit begins night-time test running over Lines 10, 11 and 12. Although built for fully automatic operation (GoA 4) and therefore without a conventional driving cab, the trains are fitted with driving desks at each end to permit manual operation when required.
This phase will verify compatibility with Metro infrastructure and validate the performance of the trains and onboard systems.
In parallel, platform screen doors are being installed at Line 6 stations and Alstom’s CBTC is being adapted to enable unattended train operation. Metro is also training staff to supervise the line and respond to incidents.
48 six-car trains for Line 6
The series 10000 fleet comprises 48 units, each 110 m long. Each train is formed of six cars: two end trailers and four intermediate motor cars. The trains are being built by CAF with Mitsubishi traction equipment.
Performance is comparable to the series 8000, with a maximum speed of 110 km/h, which Metro states will be reached on certain interstation runs. Cars are fully gangwayed, with air conditioning and automatic fire suppression. Capacity is increased thanks to a 6 cm wider carbody and the reallocation of cab space to passengers.
