Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM) has awarded the joint venture formed by CAF, Electrans and Hitachi Rail the contract to deploy the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 1 across its entire network. The project involves an investment of €30 million and a completion period of 54 months.
Hitachi Rail will design, supply and commission the trackside equipment and central control post for the ERTMS, replacing the old FAP system. The aim is to enhance the reliability, capacity and interoperability of Mallorca’s railway according to European standards.
CAF will integrate the onboard ERTMS system into 32 trainsets from the 71, 81, 91 and 1100 series, ensuring certification and regulatory compliance.
Electrans will handle the installation of the trackside signalling, integrating it with existing interlockings, and will be responsible for both preventive and corrective maintenance with local technical support.
The project includes an initial pilot phase on the Palma–University metro line, followed by a second phase rolling out the system across the rest of the SFM network. This will make it the first metro line in Spain to operate using the European system.
ERTMS Level 1 will deliver significantly improved performance compared with FAP by providing continuous protection through eurobalises, constant speed supervision and precise automatic braking. The upgrade will boost capacity, cut human error, and optimise safety and operational efficiency across the SFM network
