The Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, has announced that full double-track rail operations through the Garraf tunnels will be restored on June 8, bringing the completion date forward by one week.
The works, delivered by Adif since March 15, have affected the section between Garraf and Sitges, where single-line working has been in place. With a budget exceeding €3 million, the programme has included rehabilitation of the artificial tunnel 96 bis, strengthening of the Aiguadolç and Garraf viaducts, and works at the Sant Honorat underpass, carried out without impacting operations.
Intervention at tunnel 96 bis has involved the installation of new structural elements independent from the original concrete lining, which had deteriorated due to marine corrosion, along with cathodic protection systems and corrosion inhibitors. Waterproofing and upper drainage systems have also been upgraded.
On the viaducts, piers and retaining walls have been reinforced using stainless steel and specialist mortars in a challenging environment with difficult access and high exposure to wave action. Throughout the works, advanced structural health monitoring systems, including fibre optic sensing, have been deployed to track structural behaviour.
