The state operator Comboios de Portugal (CP) has activated an exceptional plan in response to the episode of extreme heat and red-level alerts affecting several regions from today. The objective is to maintain safety and passenger comfort under particularly demanding operating conditions for the railway.
Key measures include capping available seats on certain long-distance services during peak temperature periods, strengthening passenger information, and advising against travel in the hottest hours. The operator has also increased the provision of drinking water at stations and other strategic locations. By limiting sales, staff can re-accommodate passengers elsewhere in the train should a coach experience HVAC failure en route.
Operationally, stabled rolling stock is being kept with blinds and doors closed and, where feasible, connected to shore supply to preserve acceptable thermal conditions. Technical supervision and real-time monitoring of climate-control systems have been intensified.
As a preventive step, CP has cancelled several Intercidades services on 3 July deemed more vulnerable: IC 517, 512, 523, 524, 572 and 672. Affected passengers are being contacted and may rebook or obtain refunds free of charge.
The company will continue to assess meteorological developments in coordination with the sector and Civil Protection. Despite these measures, failures of air-conditioning equipment and further service cancellations remain possible.
