The replacement of 41 Cercanías Valencia trains from the 447 and 464 series with 465-series units transferred from Cercanías Madrid has sparked considerable controversy. Although Renfe has clarified the decision and insists there will be an increase in seats because the trains are longer, some services will see a marked reduction in capacity.
Double formations under pressure
On lines C-1, C-2 and C-6 it is currently common to see trains coupled in double formation during peak hours—two units operating as a single service, effectively doubling seat capacity. A double 447 can carry up to 1,098 passengers, while a double 464 reaches 1,200 seats. The 465s offer 748 seats in single formation, rising to 1,496 when coupled.
However, 465-series trains will not be able to run in double on line C-1 because some platforms cannot accommodate 200 m trains.
Platform extensions not planned
The obvious fix would be to lengthen platforms, as is planned for line C-5 on Cercanías Madrid—a costly but effective way to raise capacity without adding more paths on the track. Trenvista contacted the Ministry of Transport, Adif and Renfe about a possible extension. The Ministry did not respond, and Adif referred operational questions to the public operator. In short, line C-1 on Cercanías Valencia will lose double formations.
Renfe’s rationale
Renfe maintains that switching to 465s, even in single formation, will increase total capacity across the day. The operator told this outlet that the significant capacity uplift matches demand and that further adjustments will be made as needed.
Renfe argues that with this capacity and an increase in the number of services, double formations will no longer be necessary and more rolling stock will be available. The plan replaces 41 trains that currently run coupled in some time slots with 41 trains that will run singly on this line, increasing the reserve fleet and improving resilience to disruptions.
In addition, Renfe says the transition will last until the end of 2027, so over the coming year line C-1 will still see 447 or 464 units in double formation.
