The Balearic Islands government has given final approval to the informative study for the future Palma–Llucmajor railway line, which will also serve Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport, marking the end of the planning phase for the project.

Route and key stations

The 30 km line will run almost entirely within Mallorca’s busiest mobility corridor, with nearly 10 km in tunnel. It will originate at the Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears and tie into the existing network at Son Costa station, serving around a dozen neighbourhoods across Palma.

Key intermediate stops include Son Llàtzer University Hospital, the airport terminal, S’Arenal, and the Son Oms and Son Noguera industrial estates. The terminus station in Llucmajor will be located on the outskirts of the town centre, requiring an onward interchange for passengers heading to the urban core.

Journey times

The line is designed to bring the airport to within 12 minutes of central Palma, with the full run to Llucmajor taking around 30 minutes.

This replaces the earlier Trambadia tram scheme, a proposed light rail connection between the Intermodal station and the airport via the Palau de Congressos and Can Pastilla beach. It was shelved following a change of government in the Balearic Islands despite a protocol having been signed between the Ministry of Transport and the regional administration.

Budget and procurement

The project carries a total estimated budget of €811 million, covering civil works, the procurement of 20 new electric multiple units, and the construction of a maintenance depot. Contracts for the technical and construction design are currently at the offer-evaluation stage, with a base budget of approximately €6 million. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the line entering service by 2032.

Demand forecasts

Annual ridership is projected at 8.5 million passengers, representing a 73% increase on the 11.6 million journeys recorded across the Mallorcan rail network in 2025. The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility reaffirmed its commitment to this and other Mallorcan rail schemes in November 2025.
