Siemens Mobility’s Vectron Dual Mode locomotive has received approval for cross-border operation between Germany and Austria. With this certification, Austria becomes the second country—after Germany—to authorise Siemens’ dual-mode version.

Capable of operating under both electric and diesel traction, the locomotive can seamlessly transition between electrified and non-electrified sections, using electricity whenever overhead lines are available. This flexibility enhances both the sustainability and efficiency of rail transport. The locomotives can reach top speeds of 160 km/h.

The first two dual-approved locomotives have been delivered to Austrian operator Stern & Hafferl Verkehr. Built at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant, these units feature the ETCS Baseline 3.6 European Train Control System, integrated through the Trainguard Basic solution.

According to André Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, the authorisation “strengthens our commitment to delivering powerful and flexible locomotives for European rail transport.” Meanwhile, Günter Neumann, Managing Director of Stern & Hafferl Verkehr, emphasised that the new units “enable efficient last-mile operations and contribute to sustainable transport.”
