Adif Alta Velocidad (Adif AV) has awarded contracts for the supply of 100% renewable electricity totalling €1.6857 billion (including VAT).

The agreement ensures supply to both railway operators — traction energy for trains from 2026 to 2030 — and to stations, terminals, and other railway facilities of Adif and Adif AV throughout 2026 and 2027.

The main contract, covering traction energy, amounts to €1.6143 billion and is split into 16 lots, optimised to reduce consumption deviations and standardise market costs. The other two contracts, for telemetered and non-telemetered points, total €57.8 million and €13.6 million respectively.

Regarding traction energy, Adif acts as an intermediary, purchasing electricity from the awarded suppliers and then invoicing train operators.

The awarding process followed a negotiated procedure with energy suppliers, seeking better conditions based on market trends. Furthermore, railway operators will be able to apply price hedging and personalised strategies to optimise their costs.

As a new measure, Adif AV will be able, for the first time, to sell surplus energy generated from self-consumption installations, helping to reduce consumption bills.
