The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has ordered 20 new Stadler Citylink light rail vehicles, expanding the initial order of 20 units placed in fall 2024.

These trains, customized for the operator, are designed for the TRAX service operating in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.

Stadler will manufacture the vehicles at its Salt Lake City facility, reaffirming its local commitment: “built in Utah, for Utah.” The design of these new TRAX trains is being presented this week at the Utah Transportation Conference.

The UTA board approved this expansion as part of the “TRAX Forward” project, aimed at improving and expanding transit service across the region over the next decade. To date, the system operates 117 Siemens vehicles. Stadler, headquartered and operating in Salt Lake City, is the first company to build light rail vehicles for Utah on U.S. soil.

The original $129 million contract, partially funded by a federal grant, included 20 vehicles with options for 60 more. With this order, 40 vehicles have now been commissioned.

These low-floor, accessible cars enhance the customer experience with increased comfort and reliability, securing the future of public transit in Utah. Stadler employs more than 600 people at its local facility, with growth expected as demand for rail solutions rises nationwide.
