Brazilian concessionaire ViaMobilidade has awarded Alstom a contract to implement the ETCS Level 2 signalling system on São Paulo’s lines 8 (Diamante) and 9 (Esmeralda). This will be the first time the European system has been installed on a metro line.

This project, valued at 1 billion reais (approximately 180 million euros), is part of the modernisation and improvement plan for both lines, whose operation and maintenance concession was awarded to ViaMobilidade for 30 years from 2021.

The main objective is to increase operational efficiency, train frequency and optimise journey times.

ETCS Level 2 technology will enable real-time control of rail traffic, improving safety and punctuality of service. The project, to be completed within six years, includes installation on the new 8900 series trains, also supplied by Alstom.

According to Suely Sola, general manager of Alstom Brazil, “this breakthrough represents an important milestone for urban mobility in São Paulo, incorporating advanced technology proven in several European cities”. The contract reinforces ViaMobilidade’s commitment to invest R$3.8 billion in the modernisation of São Paulo’s rail network.
