Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), the United Kingdom’s largest rail operator, has transferred to public control under the Department for Transport (DfT). The company manages Thameslink, Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express services, which account for approximately one in six of the country’s train journeys .
This measure is part of the reform driven by the British Government, which is progressively integrating all passenger services into the future Great British Railways (GBR) before the end of 2027. However, private commercial operators and freight transport will remain in private hands .
No significant changes to the service offering are expected in the short term. Frozen fares will be maintained until March 2027 and the delay compensation system will continue. Seasonal service adjustments have been announced for this summer and improvements from December, including doubling Gatwick Express frequencies .
The transfer includes approximately 8,000 employees, who will retain their working conditions. The Government also foresees operational improvements, signalling investments and enhanced security .
With GTR, there are now 9 operators under state control (4 of them nationalised under Conservative governments). The next are Chiltern Railways (20 September) and Great Western Railway (13 December) .
