The Spanish Cabinet has authorised Adif to tender the construction contract for the new Tres Cantos Norte commuter rail station, with an estimated budget of €19.35 million excluding VAT.

A long-awaited scheme

The project has been in the pipeline since January 2023, when Adif first tendered the contract for the preparation of the basic and construction design — a commission worth €696,724. Adif and the local council signed a collaboration protocol in 2024 to advance the station, its associated municipal car park, and the surrounding access infrastructure.

Location and line

The new station will serve the C-4b line of the Madrid Cercanías network, sitting between the existing Tres Cantos and Colmenar Viejo stops. The northern Tres Cantos area, also known as “Nuevo Tres Cantos”, is home to Madrid Content City — Europe’s largest audiovisual production hub, spanning 140,000 m² — alongside a university campus, leisure and sports facilities, and a planned hospital.

Station design and infrastructure

The station will feature two 220-metre side platforms partially covered by canopies, a passenger building with a concourse and a café with an outdoor terrace, and a stepped three-level roof designed to blend with the surrounding environment.

The scheme also encompasses railway infrastructure upgrades, electrification and signalling works, as well as the landscaping of the station forecourt, with provision for bus stops, a taxi rank, and cycle parking.

Demand and funding

Ridership forecasts point to approximately 10,000 journeys per day at opening, a figure that could almost double in the longer term. The works may be part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and will be delivered using BIM methodology.
