Spanish technology group Indra has been selected by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) to fully renew the automatic ticket vending system across the Washington, D.C. metro network.
The contract has a base value of $38.9 million (€33.2 million) and could reach $75 million (€65 million) if all options are exercised.
The scheme covers the design, manufacture, supply, installation and 15-year maintenance of 450 terminals distributed across the 98 stations on the network’s five lines, which carry more than 500,000 passengers daily. Part of the assembly will be undertaken at Indra’s recently opened facility in Olathe, in the Kansas City area.
The new equipment will replace existing vending machines and feature high-resolution touchscreens, smartphone-like user interfaces, support for up to 15 languages and compatibility with EMV cards, mobile devices and digital wallets.
Their modular architecture will also enable integration of account-based ticketing (ABT) solutions and facilitate adaptation to future technological requirements.
