CP – Comboios de Portugal has launched a satellite-connectivity pilot on one Alfa Pendular unit, aiming to improve internet access during journeys, particularly on stretches with limited mobile coverage.
The solution, based on the Starlink platform, supplements the existing system, which relies on terrestrial mobile networks. The trial will assess performance under real commercial operating conditions, with the aim of delivering a faster, more stable connection with lower latency.
According to CP, initial results have been positive: in early tests, the satellite system has carried around 19% of total on-board traffic, proving especially useful on sections where mobile network performance is weaker.
During the trial phase, technical and operational indicators will be collected to analyse stability, coverage and passengers’ perceived service quality. These data will be key to deciding whether to roll the system out on a wider scale.
CP president Pedro Moreira said the initiative forms part of the company’s modernisation strategy, focused on improving the digital passenger experience and aligning rail services with current technological demands.
