All the unions represented on the Renfe General Works Committee (CCOO, UGT, Semaf, SFF-CGT and SF) have agreed this Monday to begin formal steps to call a strike that will affect the entire workforce.

The union movement follows the recent railway accidents in Adamuz (Córdoba) and Gelida (Barcelona), and the deterioration of the Rodalies service.

The first step will be the presentation of a “conflicts commission”, a legal requirement prior to calling a strike. If there is no agreement with Renfe management, the strike could be extended to all professional categories, beyond the train drivers for whom Semaf has already announced strikes on 9, 10 and 11 February.

The unions have also called for a united rally on 3 February in front of the Ministry of Transport to demand accountability and improvements in safety and working conditions.

From the Ministry, Óscar Puente has reiterated his willingness to negotiate in order to avoid the strike.

At the same time, Adif trade union representatives will hold an extraordinary meeting this Tuesday to assess possible mobilisations after the latest incidents on the Catalan rail network.
