Adif has reactivated its Track and Lineside Wildfire Prevention Plan for the period from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027. The initiative covers more than 15,000 km of standard, Iberian and metric gauge network, with enhanced measures during the summer months.
The programme forms part of the infrastructure manager’s overarching safety strategy to address high temperatures and forest fire risk. The 24/7 Network Management Centre coordinates actions with railway undertakings, supported by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), which provides high-resolution forecasts at 5 km intervals.
Key measures include mechanical and chemical vegetation clearance at stations, terminals and along the right of way, as well as herbicide train campaigns. Specific protocols are also set for activities with ignition risk.
The plan expands the deployment of hot axlebox detectors to monitor bearing temperatures, alongside increased surveillance at stations and on high-risk sections. Railway companies are also required to carry out stringent checks on braking systems and diesel engines.
Adif maintains coordination with Civil Protection authorities and highlights the role of train drivers in early fire detection.
