Renfe Mercancías has received €14.7 million from the European Next Generation EU funds, granted by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility. The amount forms part of the eco‑incentive scheme under Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).

This allocation places the company ahead of the nine rail freight operators benefiting from the programme, which together total €44.37 million in the 2024 call for proposals.

The grants, published in the final resolution of 16 December in the Boletín Oficial del Estado, reward the use of rail over road due to its superior environmental performance.

Renfe heads the list in terms of tonne‑kilometres transported on the General Interest Railway Network and the improvement of its environmental efficiency compared with previous years.

Operators will be able to use these subsidies to cut rates or enhance service quality, generating benefits across the logistics chain.

Co‑funded by European funds, the programme aims to strengthen rail’s share in freight transport and to reduce the external costs associated with climate change, pollution and road congestion.
