The Board of Spanish Puertos del Estado has greenlit a further investment of £11.6 million for the construction of the rail link to A Coruña’s Outer Harbour at Punta Langosteira.
Sourced from the Next Generation EU funds and the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, this financial injection raises the total allocation for the scheme to approximately £160 million.
The project has surpassed a major milestone, with all tunnels and gallery bores now complete along the alignment. In total, 7.4 kilometres have been excavated over a 6.7-kilometre single-track railway stretch reaching the docks. The standout structure is Tunnel 1, measuring 3,739 metres and featuring three emergency escape galleries; its main bore is finished, with lining and fitting-out works now underway.

Under the terms of the agreement signed in February 2022, Adif AV is managing the construction of this new link, which will be owned by the Port Authority of A Coruña (APAC).
The route is designed to current Iberian gauge standards and runs unelectrified, yet provision has been made for future electrification, and the use of multi-purpose sleepers allows straightforward conversion to European standard gauge when required.
The Port of A Coruña is cementing its status as a strategic investment hub for Galicia, taking the lead with over £362 million earmarked for works through to 2029—nearly half the region’s total projected infrastructure spend.
