Swiss rail state-owned company SBB-CFF-FFS has commissioned Siemens Mobility to build 116 new double-decker trains intended to renew the fleet on the Zürich suburban network and strengthen services in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.

The contract, worth around CHF 2 billion, also includes an option for 84 additional units.

Stadler has publicly expressed regret over the decision, highlighting the reliability of its KISS trains and the fact that it employs 6,000 people in Switzerland. SBB, however, states that Siemens’ offer best meets the tender criteria.

Of the new trains, 95 will operate on the Zürich S-Bahn network, while the remaining 21 will be assigned to the RER Vaud and the Martigny–Annemasse line.

These 150-metre-long units will provide approximately 540 seats alongside spacious multifunctional areas for bicycles, luggage, and prams.

Designed to enhance comfort and accessibility, the trains will feature low-floor entrances, power sockets in all classes, extended passenger information screens, and two toilets – including one adapted for passengers with reduced mobility. They will reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h and be capable of running in double traction.

SBB emphasises that the project boosts the attractiveness of rail travel and supports modern, sustainable mobility across Switzerland.
