Alstom has been selected to manufacture 316 new cars to form commuter trains for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and Metro-North Railroad.

The contract is valued at € 2 billion and includes an option to purchase an additional 242 cars for € 1.3 billion.

These new vehicles will form the M-9A series and replace the old M-3s, which have been in operation since 1968, representing a significant modernisation of rail transport in the New York region.

The new trains will offer a quieter, more comfortable, and more reliable travel experience. Innovations include USB ports, accessible toilets, wheelchair spaces, and wide doorways to facilitate passenger flow.

In addition, they will meet the latest cybersecurity standards and will be self-propelled electric trains, eliminating the need for a locomotive.

Half of the trains will operate on the LIRR, the most heavily used commuter service in the United States, and the rest on Metro-North, which connects New York with Connecticut.

It will be manufactured entirely in the United States, reinforcing Alstom’s commitment to local industry and sustainability. With this project, Alstom reaffirms its leadership in modernising urban rail transport.
