Stadler and Alpha Trains have signed a contract for the supply of 25 additional EURO6000 multisystem electric locomotives, with delivery scheduled for 2028. The agreement strengthens a partnership that has exceeded 150 locomotives ordered since 2007 and brings the EURO6000 fleet within Alpha Trains’ portfolio to 92 units.
The order covers two configurations: Iberian-gauge locomotives aimed at the domestic freight market, and standard-gauge units intended for deployment along the Mediterranean Corridor. The latter enable seamless cross-border operations from Spain to France, Belgium and Luxembourg, supported by full interoperability.
The six-axle EURO6000 locomotives deliver 6 MW under 25 kV 50 Hz and are capable of hauling trains exceeding 2,000 tonnes on demanding gradients with a single unit. This reduces the need for double-heading and enhances operational efficiency. Their multisystem capability supports long-distance international freight services.
According to Alpha Trains, the investment responds to growing demand for sustainable and efficient traction solutions, while Stadler highlights the role of these locomotives in advancing high-capacity, low-emission European logistics, particularly along the Iberian Peninsula–North Sea axis.
Alpha Trains currently leases EURO6000 locomotives to operators including Alsa, Captrain, Continental Rail, DB Cargo Iberia (formerly Transfesa), CFL Cargo, Low Cost Rail and Medway.
