Slovakian state-owned railway operator Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) has signed a contract with Stadler to purchase up to four double-decker electric trains of the KISS family, in a deal valued at up to €100 million.
The order, placed on 30 April 2025, provides the delivery of two firm EMU’s and the option to purchase two additional ones.
The first train will enter service at the end of 2026 and the second in 2027. Both will be destined for the line between Bratislava and Žilina. With this purchase, ZSSK will double its fleet of KISS trains, following the acquisition of four similar units in 2023.
ZSSK CEO Peter Helexa stressed that fleet renewal is key to modern and sustainable transport, underlining that the new trains will reduce energy consumption to 12 kWh per kilometre and save tens of tonnes of emissions annually.
The trains reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h, have a length of 155.9 m (6 cars), and a capacity of 1,381 seats, 611 of which are seated (30 in first class). The doors are at platform height, 580 mm, so the train is 100% accessible.
The operator says that this acquisition consolidates ZSSK’s commitment to the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport in Slovakia.
