Coimbra railway station in Portugal is already part of history. At 0:20 on 12 January, the last train left its tracks.
The closure of the railway line linking it to the Coimbra-B through station, on the outskirts, will allow the route to be converted into a BRT for the new Metro Mondego Metrobus service.
The departure of the last train took place amidst shouts of 200 demonstrators demanding the maintenance of the railway service.

To guarantee the transport service, Metro Mondego will implement a road transfer system between the two stations. This service will be free of charge for Comboios de Portugal passengers and will stop near both stations.
A frequency of 12 buses per hour is foreseen at peak times, which will be slightly reduced at other times, ensuring connection with all trains currently arriving or departing from Coimbra Station.
Work on this section of the Mondego Mobility System, which is being carried out by Infraestruturas de Portugal, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Thereafter, the Metrobus will run the route between Portagem and Coimbra B with high-capacity electric buses.
