Renfe and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a €250 million loan to fund the purchase of 101 trains aimed at modernising and expanding the Rodalies de Catalunya fleet.
This loan represents the first tranche of a total €500 million financing package approved by the EIB. Considering that 72 of the trains are series 452 units built by Alstom in Barcelona, it can be inferred that 29 of the 60 series 480 units, manufactured by CAF, will be allocated to Catalonia.
Both series will feature greater capacity, improved accessibility, and advanced safety systems compared with the trains they will replace.

The acquisition will be partially financed through this EIB loan, while Renfe will complete the investment with its own resources and state contributions via the General State Budget. This combination will strengthen the company’s strategy for sustainable fleet renewal.
Backed by the InvestEU programme, the project supports the European Investment Bank Group’s climate objectives and will promote a more efficient public transport system. Repayments on the loan will be made using revenues generated by Renfe from operating the Public Service Obligation routes for which these trains are intended.
