Renfe Ingeniería y Mantenimiento has issued a €2.37‑million tender for the supply of new seating to convert 22 Class 447 electric multiple units for regional service, with the option to adapt ten additional trains.
The project involves replacing the standard commuter seating with other suited to longer-distance journeys. The new seats will offer enhanced cushioning, include USB‑C sockets for mobile‑device charging (despite all chargers being linked to USB‑A ports), and be fitted with headrests.
These headrests will feature “winged” sides to provide lateral head support.

Once converted for regional use, each unit’s seating capacity will be reduced from 180 to 167, all in single-class configuration. The layout will consist of 83 double seats and one single.
To date, Renfe has already converted 32 Class 447 units for regional use. The first 14 were adapted in 2012, followed by 18 more in 2015, coinciding with upgrades to comply with accessibility standards for passengers with reduced mobility.
To ensure full compatibility, the guide rails for the new seats must match those used in the 2015 conversion programme.
The project will begin with the conversion of a prototype unit and will be carried out entirely at Renfe’s Valladolid workshops over a 25‑month period.
