Luxembourg-based rail leasing firm NEXRAIL has signed a contract with Stadler Valencia for the construction of up to 200 hybrid locomotives from the EURO9000 family. This marks the biggest locomotive order ever received by the factory.
The units will be capable of combining up to 9 MW of power from the overhead catenary with 1.2 MW from LTO-type batteries, each with a 636 kWh capacity. These will be the first high-power locomotives to enable completely emission-free operations between terminals, as the batteries allow for “last-mile” runs on non-electrified tracks.
Designed and built at Stadler’s Valencia plant, the EURO9000 is a six-axle Co’Co’ locomotive. It is multi-system, supporting 25 kV AC 50 Hz, 15 kV AC 16.7 Hz, 3 kV DC, and 1.5 kV DC, making it suitable for cross-border operations in countries such as Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy.

First deliveries are scheduled for 2029, with German operator Hamburger Rail Service (HRS) as the initial customer. Intelligent battery management will allow for regenerative braking energy recovery, reduced peak consumption, and optimised costs through energy storage and trading. Thanks to its high tractive effort and versatility, the EURO9000 will cut operating costs and replace diesel traction on Alpine corridors.
