The Spanish Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has reaffirmed the central government’s determination to boost railway development in Mallorca, noting that several schemes are currently under feasibility assessment.
Among the projects under consideration is the extension of the network towards Alcúdia via a 17.1‑kilometre hybrid train‑tram line linking Sa Pobla with the northern coast and Alcúdia’s ferry terminal, with an estimated annual ridership of 2.1 million passengers.
Plans also include taking the railway south to Llucmajor, incorporating stops at Son Sant Joan Airport, the Son Llàtzer University Hospital, the future trade‑fair complex, and various Palma neighbourhoods.

This new alignment would replace the shelved Trambadia project, a tramway once intended to connect Palma’s Plaça d’Espanya with the airport. Before its cancellation, a collaboration protocol had been signed between the then‑MITMA and the Balearic Government.
Puente emphasised that the government is awaiting technical reports on demand and profitability before pressing ahead with these schemes, all of which form part of the island’s pledge to deliver sustainable mobility.
