Chamartín high-speed underpass enters into service

The new underpass at Madrid Chamartín station for High-Speed trains came into operation this Wednesday, following a visit by the Spanish Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente.

Built by Adif AV, the new facility now allows all high-speed passengers to exit directly to both sides of the station. Access is available via fixed and escalator stairways, as well as lifts.

The underpass, stretching 177 metres in length and 9 metres in width, links all high-speed platforms (tracks 14 to 25) with the suburban concourse (tracks 1 to 13), streamlining multimodal connections. Until now, access to these tracks and the metro was only possible through the so-called “Red T”, between tracks 14 and 21, which is equipped solely with fixed stairways.

During the inauguration, the Minister praised the new link for “significantly enhancing passenger comfort and accessibility” and reminded that the station is undergoing a major redevelopment, backed by an investment of €540 million.

The commissioning of this new infrastructure marks another milestone in the modernisation of Chamartín, which continues operating while its upgrade progresses towards becoming an international rail hub. The works are co-financed by the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by NextGenerationEU.
