Adif Alta Velocidad has awarded a 31.4 million euro contract for the drafting of the basic and construction projects for the five sections of the new Seville-Huelva High Speed Line (HSL).

Put out to tender at the end of January, this step is key to works that will connect the two Andalusian capitals in just 25 minutes, compared to the current 1 hour and 30 minutes. The total cost of the infrastructure is estimated at more than 1.6 billion euros.

An independent platform

Although in April 2024 the Transport Ministry announced that the connection between Seville and Huelva would be improved with a 45 km variant of the conventional line, work is progressing on the project for an independent and complementary line.

In January, we asked José Antonio Sebastián, Commissioner for the Atlantic Corridor, about this issue. In his reply, he indicated that the choice between one solution and the other would depend on the funds available to carry out the work.

The contracting of drafting of the construction projects has been structured in five lots in which the 95.5 kilometres of the route were divided, in accordance with the informative study approved in December 2024.

The projects will be drafted simultaneously to reduce the time before the construction is put out to tender. The line will be built in standard gauge and is designed for speeds up to 350 km/h.

Section 1 – From Majarabique to Valencina de la Concepción (8.1 km)

The first section has been awarded for 6.62 million euro and includes the creation of the new Majarabique railway junction, with branches for the four directions of traffic and two large viaducts. One of them over the Guadalquivir and the other one over the Santa Cruz neighbourhood in Seville. In addition, a third, smaller structure will be built over the river’s clog.

Section 2 – From Valencina to Sanlúcar la Mayor (18.6 km)

Lot 2, valued at 6.22 million, is notable for the La Muela tunnel, with shafts and safe evacuation areas, and for the viaducts over the Guadiamar, La Corona and Arroyo Acebucha rivers.

Two cut-and-cover tunnels and a dozen passes are also included to ensure territorial permeability.

Section 3 – From Sanlúcar la Mayor to La Palma del Condado (26.2 km)

The third lot is awarded for 6.14 million and includes three minor viaducts, a pergola over the conventional line and three cut-and-cover tunnels, including a long one next to Manzanilla with reinforced safety measures.

Section 4 – From La Palma del Condado to Niebla (25,3 km)

The fourth lot, awarded for 7.13 million euros, will include four viaducts, two pergolas over the existing track and numerous crossing structures. This section will also see the reorganisation of the track yard at La Palma station, adapting it to its future role as an intermediate point on the line.

Section 5 – From Niebla to Huelva (17.2 km)

The fifth and last section has been awarded for 5.25 million euros. It incorporates five viaducts -including those crossing the A-49 and the Huelva-Zafra lines-, a pergola and a total of 18 overpasses and underpasses.

Strategic connection and European support

Once completed, the new line will integrate the province of Huelva into the Spanish high-speed network, strengthening its connection with Seville and the country as a whole. Furthermore, the project will be eligible for funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
