Now that most of the renovation work on RFIG line 512, Zafra-Huelva, has been completed, Renfe will resume the Zafra-Jabugo-Huelva Media Distncia (Regional) service from Monday 15 September. Tickets are already on sale.

These works, which have involved an investment of over 250 million euros, have significantly improved the infrastructure, enabling the reduction of journey times and an increase in the reliability of railway operations.

Restoration of service

The new transport offer has been designed following a mobility study and the participation of users through the Customer Forum. Specifically, the following trains will run from next Monday:

Thanks to the complete renovation, journey times for Media Distancia trains have improved considerably: 1h 36 min between Huelva and Jabugo (18 minutes less and only about 10 minutes more than by car) and 2h 52 min between Huelva and Zafra (25 minutes less).

Complete renovation of the Zafra-Huelva line

The improvements consisted of a comprehensive track renovation, including the replacement of rails, sleepers and ballast on large sections, which increases the reliability and durability of the infrastructure. Embankments, bridges and metallic structures have also been reinforced, and tunnels have been waterproofed to guarantee greater operational safety.

In the area of signalling, the line has been equipped with electronic interlockings and automatic blocking on single tracks, replacing telephone blocking with modern systems that increase capacity and reduce risks. Likewise, the train-ground has been replaced by GSM-R and the installations are now controlled by CTC.

Lastly, work has been carried out at several stations, with improvements to platforms, accessible paving, passenger information systems and new lighting, improving the quality of the service for both daily users and leisure travellers.

With the reopening of this connection, the railway reinforces its role as a strategic communication axis between the capital of Huelva, the Sierra and the southwest of Extremadura, in a corridor that now offers greater reliability, accessibility and competitiveness compared to road transport.
