This Friday, 1 August sees the start of the eagerly awaited ‘The Greatest Gathering’ festival at Alstom’s Litchurch Lane factory in Derby, UK. A major railway event that is part of the celebration of the bicentenary of the modern railway.
The event, which will run until Sunday, 3, will bring together more than 50 iconic trains from the oldest to the most modern. It will also be the first time in 50 years that this factory will open its doors to the public.
Among the most emblematic models on display will be:
- The legendary Locomotion No. 1 (the first locomotive to run on public rail in 1825).
- The legendary LNER Class A4 “Sir Nigel Gresley” from 1937.
- The historic “Furness Railway No. 20” (the oldest working steam locomotive in the UK).
- The “Pendolino” of class 390 nicknamed “Progress”.
- The 3999 Eurostar power car.
- A power head (class 43) from the HST.
- A modern Aventra class 720.
As well as historic trains, the public will be able to enjoy activities, talks, and a model railway village. The sold-out event is set to be the key event of the year for enthusiasts and celebrates the past, present, and future of British railways.
