Adif (Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias) is pressing ahead with the tender process for a new in-house rolling-stock maintenance depot in the Vallecas area of Madrid. To date, the agency has committed around €95 million to the facility itself, associated infrastructure and site security during construction.
The scheme involves demolishing existing structures to erect a new building and laying out two track complexes: a northern set for rolling-stock maintenance and a southern set to interface with the Madrid–Barcelona–French Border high-speed line, including a stub-end (dead-end) siding.
The project also ties in the bypass track to link with the conventional network between Vallecas Industrial and Villaverde Bajo, at the Rebolledo junction, thereby guaranteeing connectivity with the Iberian-gauge network.
Once completed, the new base will upgrade maintenance capacity for Adif’s fleet of more than 600 vehicles operating across both high-speed and conventional lines. The portfolio includes six dual-gauge inspection trains, 47 locomotives and assorted track machinery.
