A 30-year-old fitter died this Wednesday and two other employees sustained fractures of varying severity after a steel part or item of machinery came away during train maintenance operations. According to some unofficial sources, it may have been a bogie or one of its components, such as the frame.
The incident was recorded at around 14:20 at Renfe’s Base de Mantenimiento Integral (Integral Maintenance Depot) in Villaverde, Madrid, formerly known as the TCR. Samur-Protección Civil and Summa 112 units, together with Madrid Municipal Police patrols, were dispatched to the site. On the arrival of paramedics, the fatality was unconscious, and despite stabilisation attempts, Summa 112 medics could only confirm his death. The other two workers, treated by Samur for fractures, were stabilised and transferred to hospital.
Investigation and Renfe’s response
The Judicial Coordination Unit of the Municipal Police has taken charge of inspecting the site to determine the cause of the failure that led to the structure’s collapse, in a case already being processed as a workplace accident. The deceased worked for an external contracting firm providing services at the Madrid plant. Renfe issued a statement expressing its profound regret over the fatality and conveying condolences to family, colleagues and loved ones, and announced it will open an internal investigation to establish what happened and prevent a recurrence.
