The southern extension of the Granada Metro is scheduled to enter service before the end of 2026. This marks the first major expansion of the network, adding 4.7 km of route and seven new stops between Armilla, Churriana de la Vega and Las Gabias.
Civil engineering works are now 100% complete, including formation, stops, OLE masts and catenary, as well as the energisation of substations. Current activity is focused on railway signalling systems, which are 76% complete and expected to be finalised in August.
Dynamic testing will begin in September, initially without passengers and progressively ramping up to full operational conditions.
The project, co-financed through Next Generation EU funds, represents an investment of €130 million, including the procurement of eight new CAF Urbos LRVs, which have already entered service.
A notable feature of the extension is the new La Gloria viewpoint over the Dílar river, a 56 m-wide structure offering views across the Vega and Sierra Nevada. This site commemorates the former Line 4 of the metropolitan tramway, which operated until the late 1960s, with original rails recovered during construction.
The viewpoint is integrated with an interchange hub combining metro, bus services and a 250-space park-and-ride facility.
