The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through infrastructure manager Adif, has awarded a €4.5 million contract to develop the construction design for the modernisation of the conventional line between Miranda de Ebro and Logroño (70.6 km), a prerequisite ahead of the tendering of works.

The scheme aims to increase line capacity and infrastructure reliability for both passenger and freight services, while strengthening La Rioja’s connectivity and enhancing links between the Atlantic and Mediterranean corridors.

The project will define alignment improvements, structural strengthening works (including tunnels, viaducts and bridges), drainage optimisation, and gauge enhancement to accommodate rolling motorway services. In parallel, Adif is already delivering electrification upgrades (€21.3 million) and is drafting the design for the Logroño–Castejón section.

These interventions form part of the broader renewal of the conventional network in Navarra and La Rioja, with 155 km currently under execution, alongside the 9.3 km Rincón de Soto bypass. Collectively, they will improve operational performance and facilitate a future connection to the Navarra high-speed line via the Castejón junction.
