Spain’s Council of Ministers has authorised the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to tender, through Adif Alta Velocidad, the construction of the new Vera-Almanzora station on the Murcia–Almería high-speed line (HSL). The base contract value stands at £15.69 million, excluding VAT.

A key node on the Mediterranean Corridor

The station will be sited on the southern edge of the municipality of Vera and will serve long-distance services operating on the Murcia–Almería high-speed Mediterranean Corridor, improving rail connectivity in an area with strong tourist and economic growth potential. The design process was awarded to engineering firm Saitec back in March 2023, with an 18-month brief for the project and a further 12 months of on-site technical assistance during construction.

Station layout and facilities

The station building will cover a floor area of 1,850 m² and will house a main concourse, boarding area, ticket office, passenger services for multiple train operating companies, a retail unit and office space. Since the rail formation sits approximately 8.6 metres above ground level, access to the 450-metre platforms will be provided via a subway equipped with four lifts and four escalators.

Interchange and road access

The contract also covers external landscaping, a car park of between 150 and 200 spaces, bus and taxi drop-off facilities, and a road access link from junction km 8.05 of the A-352 dual carriageway. The wider Murcia–Almería HSL project — which will deliver the first direct rail connection between the two cities — forms part of the Mediterranean Corridor programme, backed by a total investment of over €3.3 billion, partly funded through EU FEDER structural funds.
