Alstom is strengthening its presence in the Basque Country with the appointment of Iñaki Rojo as the new general manager of its plant in Trápaga (Bizkaia), one of the group’s technological powerhouses in Europe. The site, specialising in electric traction systems, supplies solutions for all types of trains — from commuter units to high-speed models and urban metros.

Rojo, an industrial engineer trained in Bilbao, embodies a story of continuity and evolution within the company. After more than two decades of experience at Bombardier and Alstom — most of them linked to the same Biscayan centre where he recently led the Quality department — he now takes on the management role with the challenge of consolidating the plant’s international presence in the global market.

The Trápaga factory, covering 45,000 square metres and staffed by a highly skilled workforce, is one of Alstom’s strategic hubs in Europe. Formerly part of Bombardier, it was integrated into the French giant following the acquisition of the Canadian company’s Transportation division.

From Biscay, systems are designed and manufactured that power trains across four continents, including rolling stock from other manufacturers such as Talgo — positioning the Basque Country as a global benchmark for railway innovation.
