The Spanish Union of Railway Drivers and Assistants (Semaf) has announced five days of strike action at Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) on 24 and 25 February and 2, 3 and 4 March. The industrial action aims to “improve the safety of the network” and to urge the management to respond to a dozen pending requests.
FGC has expressed its “surprise” at what it describes as an “artificial” and “harmful” call to strike for public mobility, pointing out that Semaf holds only 13% of the representation on the works council. The operator insisted that its management system, certified under European directives, guarantees safety levels and stressed that “safety is not negotiable.”
The company statement also highlights that key quality indicators, such as punctuality and service control, exceed 99% across all lines — evidence, according to FGC, of the sound performance of its operational model and its commitment to continuous improvement.
Nonetheless, FGC says it has taken part in the mediation process led by the Department of Business and Labour and proposed discussing the union’s demands at an extraordinary safety committee meeting scheduled for 25 February, though the meeting ended without agreement. Minimum service levels will be set by the Department and communicated through FGC’s official channels.
