On 31 May, the Community of Madrid will begin work on the refurbishment of Line 6 of the Madrid metro. This line is the most heavily used in the network, with more than 116 million users in 2024 and a daily average of 400,000 passengers.
The aim is to improve the infrastructure and make it the first line of the Madrid underground without a train driver.
Although the new trains will arrive in 2027, two service cuts have been scheduled this year to complete the necessary work.
On the one hand, the track profile will be improved to increase speed, the platforms will be adapted for the new 60 mm wider trains, and the platform doors will be prepared for installation. Alstom will be responsible for upgrading the CBTC installed on the line.
From 31 May to 12 September, the service will be interrupted between Moncloa, Príncipe Pío and Méndez Álvaro. From this day until 31 December, the section affected will be Moncloa-Avenida de América-Legazpi.
To replace the cut sections, the Community has implemented an alternative plan with free EMT buses, with frequencies between 3 and 5 minutes. To speed up the work, more than 2,000 workers will work in shifts 24/7.
